Project Description
Our project manufactures and provides the only “made-in-Bolivia” prosthetics to low income Bolivian amputees. We use prosthetic designs (drawings) which have been invented and donated by international organizations to help us make the most advance prosthetics possible.
We also try to use all local materials and Bolivian technicians to make these devices so that we can manufacture them at a fraction of the cost of imported prosthetics and then donate them to the poorest of the poor.

Project Summary
Volunteers will help in all aspects of the prosthetic centre. Our centre is very small and so each volunteer will often do a little bit of everything even helping to make the physical prosthetic at times.
Some volunteers help to refine and improve the designs and others help make sure that all the patient records are up to date in the computer while others can work directly with the patient to interview them and help them with physiotherapy.
It all depends on the volunteer’s willingness to be flexible take a new challenge.
The cost of living can be very low in Bolivia; it really depends on the type of lifestyle you want. For example a clean hotel room with a shared bathroom is about $7/night. A hotel with a private bathroom is about $10/night. A private apartment with bathroom and kitchen is between $150-$200/month.
Food is super cheap if you go to local restaurants, a full lunch is $2 and a full dinner is between $2 and $5. If you go to nicer restaurants it is between $5 and $10 for dinner.
Local public transport is super cheap about 35 US cents to get across the city. Internet is super cheap some of the cheapest in the world at about 30 cents per hour. Laundry is about $1/kilo. If you drink in a local bar then a large beer is about $1.5. In a tourist bar a beer is $3.
On the other hand if you WANT to spend a lot of money then you can find places for that here also -- i.e. expensive hotels and fancy restaurants.
We do not have a specific still requirement but we do need our volunteers to be over 20 years of age and speak at least a little Spanish. Furthermore we are looking for volunteers who have some (but not necessarily all) of the following traits, abilities and flexibility:
- Can take the work seriously and responsibly.
- Understands and accept that the job may not always be well defined.
- Is willing to do a little bit of anything and everything.
- Can be a general problem solver: “seeing” problems on their own and take it upon themselves to solve them.
- Solves these problems from “start to finish”. In other words once they start a task they should not expect someone else to check up and remind them to finish.
- Is Logical, dependable, responsible, mature, and organized.
- Is willing to 'urge' and motivate others to do their jobs.
- Is able to work with their hands and with tools as well as with their head.
- Is willing to help part-time with some office type assignments.
- Will document their work as necessary such as the value of specific experiments you may be asked to try.
