We have tried to cover the main questions asked by organisations and volunteers, however if we have missed anything don’t hesitate to ask and we will answer your question as soon as we can.
Volunteer Questions:
Why should I join Sustainable Vision rather than another organisation?
The best thing about Sustainable Vision is that any fee you pay to volunteer goes directly to the project you work with, with no middlemen you know your money is helping the project to reach its aims. All fees are minimal and in some cases volunteering is free of charge, projects do not in general pay volunteers, cover transportation, flights or insurance, volunteers must also provide their own spending money, however, some projects do provide food and accommodation.
We only work with grass roots organisations, low cost projects and those that are not for profit so you know you are getting value for money and making a real difference to the world around you.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
To volunteer with Sustainable Vision you generally need to be 18 or above or volunteer with a parent or guardian, some projects require members to be 21 and over.
Can we volunteer as a family?
Most organisation will accept younger volunteers if part of a family, however generally you must still be aged 16 and over, but every case is different so contact projects and find out if this is a possibility.
How do I find a placement?
Simply click on the region you would like to volunteer in on the map on the homepage and select the country or use the search function by either typing the country you wish to volunteer in or the type of volunteering you would like to be involved in. You can either contact organisations through contact details on their Sustainable vision page or follow the links to their webpages and social media accounts and contact them via those.
Can you arrange placements?
No, we provide free information to contact organisations either through their social media accounts, websites, telephone or email, we summarise this information on their page. We do not arrange placements for volunteers, however if you are having problems communicating with an organisation we will do our best to resolve them and update the information on our pages.
How do I get there?
Some organisations offer an airport pick up service or can put you in touch with a suitable transfer service or give you information on how to get there using public services.
Can I go with a friend or partner?
Generally yes and we recommend volunteering with someone you know, most organisations welcome couples and friends. The best thing to do is contact the organisation you want to work with and ask; the further in advance you do this the more likely they are to say yes.
Do I need insurance?
YES, Sustainable Vision cannot be held responsible for any damage, loss of belongings, health problems etc. whilst you are on placement, we just help to provide a contact directory to make searching for placements easier.
Therefore we recommend you have your own personal travel insurance. We have partnered with World Nomads whose travel insurance is recommended by Lonely Planet.
Can I change my placement length?
As a volunteer you are free to terminate your placement whenever you want, but be mindful how this will affect the project and only do so if necessary. If you wish to extend your stay this is normally possible but is at the discretion of the project coordinator, remember we put you in touch with organisations but do not run any of the projects ourselves.
Will projects or Sustainable Vision pay my flights?
No, volunteers must cover 100% of their costs themselves. If you don’t know where to start, first look at the fundraising section of our blog.
Project Questions:
Does it cost anything to advertise our project?
No, Sustainable Vision will always be free for organisations to join and advertise the only requirement is you are grass roots organisations, low cost project or not for profit. As a guide project and organisation fees should be no more than £500/month including food and accommodation. We do except projects with fees above this and look at each project on their own merits, for example some projects in aboard research boats or in very unique locations or with particular overheads may cost more, as long as you are a not for profit and your finances are transparent you will be considered.
How do we register or project?
Simply click on the add project on the home page or footer. You will need to fill in a project information form in order for us to create you page and provide us with a minimum of two volunteers whom can provide references for you organisation.
Once you have submitted this information and we have received your references we will create your page and send you a link to check the information and join the community.
How does registering benefit us?
Each project will have their own page containing key information about their work and links to your own websites and social media accounts.
By being part of Sustainable Vision it’s easier for potential volunteers to find your organisation and aid you to reach your goals.
