Project Description

CEPIA is a Costa Rican based non-profit and non-governmental organization, which seeks to improve the quality of life of children and adolescents from poor backgrounds in Costa Rica by promoting:

  1. cultural development
  2. educational and market opportunities
  3. physical and mental health
  4. social cohesion and participation

CEPIA commits to being a transparent organization which is democratically and professionally organized. CEPIA acts as an active defender of equality, equity, and diversity, as well as a promoter of rights and empowerment of children and adolescents.

The programs of CEPIA are aimed at children and teenagers from 0 to 19 years old and their families. The children are attending public schools (Huacas, Brasilito, Potrero, Playa Grande, La Garita Nueva, La Garita Vieja, El Llanito, Matapalo, Santa Rosa, Villarreal, Hernandez, Los Pargos, Cartagena) and teenagers not attending school for reasons related to poverty, unhealthy environments and learning disabilities.

CEPIA volunteers are required to be able to work a minimum 16 hours a week during at least 6 weeks, OR minimum 4 hours per week during at least 12 weeks, CEPIA offer many Volunteer activities such as:


Teach art, sport, games or English to 1 group of children or teenagers or adults once or twice a week (mostly 4:30-5:30pm or Saturdays)

Organize a movie night

Offer a workshop to children or teenagers (about for example health, your culture, world news, tolerance, respect, positive communication, etc…)

Investigation work (interviews and observations about one topic)

Administrative work (computer work, decoration of the centre, repairs, organize clothes or materials, hang up posters in the villages, hand out flyers, take pictures, videos, organize our storage room…)

Organize games and activities during summer camp (January/February and July)

Help during events

Work at our library on Saturdays 2-5pm

Promote reading and use of our library: organize a reading stories activity and games with books, in English or Spanish, on Saturday afternoon.

Help during the classes of the teenagers (Tuesdays and Thursdays they receive English, computer, mathematics, Spanish, culture, group dynamics, art, sports)

Help a child with writing or reading problems (in Spanish)

Help serving lunch at CEPIA on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or transport lunch from restaurant to CEPIA center

Offer games, art and educational support to the children of the PANI (Child Protection agency) shelter in Santa Cruz (one day a week minimum after 2pm)

Visit families that live in poverty and do a social-economic study of each family (observation and questionnaire we have at CEPIA), during the whole stay + contact the families when we have donations for them such as food or materials so they can pick it up.

Offer a professional training to (young) women or man (example: haircutting, cooking, massage, tourism, cleaning, etc.)

Pick up food in San Jose to bring it to CEPIA (at the Food Bank)

Update our website and Facebook page

Help with the marketing of the microbusinesses of women (beauty care and eco-jewelry)

CEPIA does not offer remuneration for the volunteer work, for transportation, for food or housing.

CEPIA pays for the transportation during activities and materials needed for activities.

CEPIA knows a hosting family (+/- 65$ per week, including breakfast, evening dinner, clothes washing and single room). Independent apartments are for rent around 250 $ per month (incl water, furniture, kitchen equipment, fan, TV), electricity not included (depends on your airco use), in the area of CEPIA.

The student will be assigned to a staff member of CEPIA who will be his/her supervisor.
