Project Description

Colombia Sin Fronteras is an NGO based in Santa Marta, in the North of Colombia. We work with children aged 5 – 15, with a long-term vision of also working with adults. We promote literacy, numeracy, culture and sport in a vulnerable community through our after-school programme with the aim of improving the quality of life for these children and future generations.

Whilst most of our children attend school provided by the government on a daily basis, many still lack basic skills such as reading and writing, and as a result struggle to become integrated in society.

We also believe that alongside education, social skills are essential to ensure a steady future and to create peace and harmony within their community, and as such, teach children about morals and values, and how to be good citizens.

We are entirely independent from the government, and run off donations and volunteers teaching the children.

  • Project Summary

We are open Monday-Friday, and expect our volunteers to commit to at least 4 days a week. Whilst volunteers are only required to teach for 2 hours a day, they are expected to spend the mornings planning lessons with other volunteers, and take part in teacher training sessions.

Volunteers may lead classes, or may just be classroom assistants depending on how many staff we have at any time. They will be responsible for planning lessons, teaching, but should also expect a level of responsibility outside of the classroom (help with fundraising, for example).

To volunteer with our organisation, there is no cost or donation required. As a grass-roots NGO, we require a high level of independence from our volunteers, and as such, they must be responsible for their own housing, food and travel. We can help by putting them in touch with homestay families in the area, or recommending places to eat, but ultimately it will be their own responsibility.

The main requirements are:
A good level of spoken Spanish
Over 18 years old
A minimum stay of 2 months
