Project Description

Conservation Volunteers welcomes people with a love of the outdoors and an interest in the environment to take part as a volunteer in one of our many conservation projects.  Founded in 1982 in Australia, and 2006 in New Zealand, Conservation Volunteers is both not-for-profit and non-political.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds. No prior skills or experience are required, as we teach volunteers everything they need to know to carry out projects safely and effectively.

Conservation Volunteers projects are managed in conjunction with project partners that may include regional councils, national parks, museums, land care groups, conservation departments and other national conservation agencies. Typical activities include planting trees, removing weeds, building tracks and trails, helping to restore heritage sites and carrying out a range of wildlife surveys and habitat restoration projects.

All activities are team based, with up to 10 volunteers joining a Conservation Volunteers Team Leader to undertake projects in urban, regional and remote areas.

  • Project Summary

Volunteers can join projects lasting for a day, a week or longer. Our projects run during the week (Monday – Friday) as well as on weekends. Choose from a single day activity, or join us on a residential project (open to volunteers aged 18+).

Our normal project hours are from 8am – 4pm daily, with plenty of breaks. Volunteers are part of a team of up to 10 people, under the guidance and management of a Conservation Volunteers Team Leader.

Activities will vary depending on the project. It’s important that volunteers tell us about any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies or injuries which may affect their participation at the time of booking.

Joining projects for a single day is free – however it’s essential to book first. Volunteers also need to book in advance to join residential projects. These start from AU$208 for a short Conservation Break, leaving on Monday morning and returning on Friday afternoon. Longer projects start from AU$700 for 2 weeks, starting and finishing on Fridays.

Our projects run across Australia every week, all year round, apart from a short break between Christmas and New Year. These prices apply to projects in Australia and New Zealand, with all bookings handled by our Australian booking office. All residential projects include all meals, accommodation (all shared style – can include hostels, houses, caravans, camping – tents supplied, etc), and project transport.

Volunteers need to bring a sleeping bag, and appropriate clothing / footwear to meet our safety standards. We supply a short list, essentially this means that volunteers need to be able to cover up from sun / scratches, and have closed footwear – boots are preferred.

Volunteers for single day (non-residential projects should be aged 17 – 75. Volunteers joining residential projects should be aged 18 – 75.

Volunteers should be in good general health for this active outdoors program. All volunteers are asked to declare any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies or injuries at the time of booking.
