Project Description

Deep Jyoti Charitable Trust is a non-profit organisation established in 2010 with the aim of providing  formal and non-formal education, nutrition and basic health support for poor and needy children, street and working children and under privileged children and adults in a most loving and caring atmosphere. We are presently working in Sukhpur, Supaul of Bihar India to make a big difference in the life of Bihar’s slum children.

Deep Jyoti translates to “ray of light” in English, and it is our hope that the educational nutrition and health support we provide will be a ray of light in the lives of these children.

Low literacy rates are the backbone of an impoverished community. Too many slum children are anaemic and underweight for their age. The incident of water and food related illness is extremely high and proper sanitation is virtually non-existent. Over 90% of our students come from families without proper food, toilet, and clothes in their homes. The vast majority of our kids are underweight for their age. Families do not have enough money to provide them with proper food every day. Children are only eating fruit once a year; during mango season which lasts for 2 months. They are not getting enough protein or vegetable either. Most students are anaemic and this hinders proper long term development.

We aim to provide free before and after school tutoring to children in need. Our hope is that by providing these tutoring sessions, our children will be able to become successful in their academic endeavours and break out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

Furthermore, Deep Jyoti is committed to making sure that our children are healthy enough to attend school.
Deep Jyoti’s mission is to ensure that the kids of sukhpur village are afforded every possible advantage to succeed in school while making sure that they are healthy to do so. Therefore they can live their lives to the fullest with dignity and self-respect. Through educational, primary health check-up and Nutrition support, we expect improve their life conditions and contribute to protect the environment.
