Project Description
El Nahual is a non-profit, non-governmental organization funded by its Spanish language school. The mission behind El Nahual is to develop and promote programmes in education, art, culture, sport and cooperative work, which drive social change within the general population.
We strive to provide affordable or free education to families and children who would not otherwise have the resources or opportunity to attend. All of our proceeds return directly to the community.
The children that we serve often come from families who have been marginalized by poverty, indigenous Mayan heritage, or rural backgrounds, and many lack access to the privilege of a primary school education even though six years are theoretically provided free of charge under the Guatemalan public education system.

Project Summary
Our main project is called Manos de Colores (Coloured Hands), which is a after school program (2.30-5pm Mon-Fri) for local children. Our volunteers plan and teach English and art classes and give homework support.
Volunteers can also teach English either at external (public) schools or in our accelerated Primary Education Program at El Nahual (on Saturdays).
Alternative volunteer projects:
Publicity, fund-raising, administrative help, also computer and web site help.
Volunteers are expected to work at least 4 hours per week and typically they work between 15 to 20 hours.
Volunteering itself doesn't cost anything for a volunteer. If a volunteer wants to stay with a host family the weekly cost is Q500/ $65 (incl. 3 meals/day, 7 days/week). If a volunteer also takes Spanish classes the cost with homestay is Q1300/ $170 /week or Q1075/ $140 without a homestay.
Volunteers are expected to pay all their own costs (flights, transport, medical security etc) and if they decide to live in a hostel, they have to pay their own food and accommodation.
We do expect high-beginner to low-intermediate Spanish from our volunteers. Volunteers who are not confident in their Spanish are recommended to take two weeks of Spanish classes.
We have a minimum time commitment of 3 weeks for non-students. Also to be able to teach in the public schools, a volunteer must commit for at least 3 weeks.
