Project Description
ELENA started as an informal initiative in 1991 to train young girls, who have not been opportune to have a place in post primary educational institution, to design and make dresses.
In the year 2 000 in line with Law No 90/053 of 19th December 1990 the initiative was registered as a Non Governmental Organization (NGO). This brought ELENA into a legal existence.
ELENA aims at enlightening women throughout the community on issues facing women and children. ELENA provides the community with a resource on counselling and for finding out more information on issues such as HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmissible Infections (STIs), teenage pregnancies, abortions, women’s rights, promotes exclusive feeding of children up till to 6 months amongst other activities.
Our work is also geared towards the socioeconomic upliftment of the women (life skills training for young girls), and promote respect for, observance of and protection of the dignity and economic security of women. We also combat life styles based on dependence, egoism and legalized discrimination against women.
