Project Description

Esperanza Verde is a conservation project under construction in the Amazon basin of Peru, consisting of both wildlife rescue and rainforest protection. Our aim is to work closely together with the local community, offering alternative sources of income, so that the forest can be managed in a sustainable way.

To start up Esperanza Verde the project now owns 58 hectares (approx. 143 acres) of rainforest, named 'Selva Dormida'. With the help of the people of Bello Horizonte, our neighboring village, we hope to be able to protect a bigger area in the future.
Nature conservation project Esperanza Verde consist of:
1. Wildlife rescue centre;
2. Reforestation;
3. Investigation-education;
Its aims are:
Conservation of tropical rainforest and its wildlife;
Enhancement of the general living conditions in the area.

1. Wildlife rescue centre: Animal caretaking (feeding, cleaning cages, special care if necessary e.g.. mothering baby animals, administration of medicine, observations of behavior), making enrichment for resident animals.
2. Reforestation: planting seeds at the nursery, planting small trees in deforestation areas of the forest, mapping with GPS existing paths or different aspects of the terrain.

3. Investigation-education (depending on background and time of stay of applicant): There are possibilities to do research on different aspects of conservation e.g. inventory of plant-tree species, or fauna existing in this area. Helping out at the local school (primary and secondary), either teaching English or giving lectures about conservation.
Work hours are from 7:30 till 16:00, unless some animals need attention after. morning break of half an hour after animal feeding, lunch from 12-13pm. Weekends are off (no constructions or other choirs), except for helping out with animal care taking (resident animals).

Costs are 210 Peruvian soles per week (approximately $80 and also payable in US dollars), including food and accommodation as well as a small contribution for the project to buy materials.
During free time there are possibilities to go swimming in the big river, go to the waterfall, have a forest walk, visit the local village, or go to the nearest town (1 hour) for internet or phone calls.

Minimum age 18 years, no maximum age. No specific skills. Willing to work hard and get hands dirty, be flexible, like animals. Able to live in primitive conditions: no electricity, no hot shower, basic food. As we are at the beginning, someone with construction work or carpentry skills comes in handy, 2 week minimum stay.
