Project Description
The Andean Bear Foundation researches, rescues, rehabilitates and liberates Andean bears in Ecuador, in addition to providing information about the bears at local, national and international levels. We receive no funds from the state for this so we need your support and donations if we are to continue helping this endangered species (also known as the spectacled bear).
We rehabilitate and liberate as many captive Andean bears as we can, when we have the funds to do so. But some captive bears will never be suitable for liberation – due to old age, disability and illness, some just would not be able to survive in the wild. We believe that these bears deserve a dignified retirement in a natural setting with an appropriate diet and suitable behavioural enrichment. To achieve this, we need to find the funds to build and run a sanctuary for them.
Andean bears are vulnerable to extinction, mostly due to habitat loss and illegal hunting. Little is known about the species and there is much more to learn. By observing bears in the Sanctuary, we hope to learn more about how they behave and use this information to better understand the conservation needs of wild bears.
