Project Description

Guardabarranco S.A. is a non-profit social enterprise based in Ocotal, Nicaragua that works with local farmers and people in the communities of Nueva Segovia.

We use profits generated through coffee-industry centred tours and courses to fund a small volunteer program that seeks to develop sustainable, ecologically responsible agriculture.

It is our mission to improve the local economy and quality of life by creating a venue for an exchange of knowledge, culture, and skills between the people of the region and individuals from around the world.
We arrange work-exchange homestays in both the coffee harvest and in small local farms.

Whether you would like to learn more about organic and sustainable farming, coffee processes, or teaching, our program is designed to give potential volunteers the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in fields that interest them.

Coffee Harvest Volunteering

Our coffee volunteering program is a seasonal volunteer opportunity for people with an interest in learning more about organic and sustainable coffee processes. The focus of the project is on the sustainable production of coffee for small producers.

Volunteers will stay at coffee farms during the harvest (Nov-Mar) and work with the migratory workers who flood into the mountains surrounding Ocotal during the coffee season.

This part of our program offers a chance to experience Nica life in some of the most removed parts of the mountains.

Agricultural Volunteering

People in the rural communities we work with survive on subsistence crops harvested with manual techniques. In our agricultural home-stays, volunteers live in a home-stay and work with the family on their daily tasks.

This means they work when the family works and eat what the family eats. It’s our hope at Guardabarranco that volunteers be eager to learn this region’s traditional farming methods and ways of life, and in turn will share some of your own culture with your host family.

Agricultural and Coffee volunteers pay $30 weekly. This covers board and 3 meals a day, but does not cover purified water.

We ask that volunteers have at least an intermediate level of Spanish. In the case that a volunteer is willing to make a longer than normal commitment, there is the possibility that we will accept a lower level of Spanish.
Agricultural volunteers must make a 3 month commitment. Coffee harvest volunteers must commit at least 2 weeks.
