Project Description
Here at HMWS we dedicate our time and efforts to empowering the poorest communities through education and medical assistance regardless of race, creed, color, religion, beliefs, circumstance or environment.
Our organisation here in Gorubathan, Darjeeling is a small community based charity, registered under the government of West Bengal, INDIA. Through the hard work and commitment of our volunteers we can continue to provide a better life for those most needing within our district.
Himalayan Media Welfare Society is a community based grassroots; non-government and non-profit voluntary organisation, working for the welfare of the society since its inception in the year 2007. We currently have a number of programs we are working on:
1: Educational program:
Education is the integral part of all around development of a child. The facilities and teaching method differs in different schools. The underprivileged schools may not able to provide such quality education even though having many hardworking teachers.
Therefore the volunteers will definitely help and work among these schools to bring certain level of difference that will build innovative thoughts to the children as well as teachers.
*Volunteers can help in English conversation among students.
*Volunteers creating such environment that will enhance children in learning, playing, drawing, painting, music, singing and physical activities.
*Providing teaching aids will make education interesting.
*Sharing and exchanging new ideas and views on different topics.
*Creatively helping school to raise fund to fulfil their education needs.
* Volunteers do not need to be a qualified teacher.
As volunteers you will be expected to teach Basic English and other subjects in English and energizers to students.
2: Child care and Educational programs:
This Day Care Centre aims to help the poor in inaccessible areas. We provide free tutorial classes and other scholastic needs like books, pens, storytelling services, clothes, choreography training, artistic competitions, refreshment etc. to the Children who are underprivileged, abandon, semi orphan, orphan and whose family members are working as labourers. We celebrate their birthdays and give them small gifts. We also help them with any sicknesses and ensure they are healthy. We are trying to bring education to children from extremely poor families and allow them a happy start in life.
Children will not get personal tutor to improve more in educational/physical/psychological field.
Volunteers may help their homework and even help them to understand lesson more clearly i.e. teaching them about health and hygiene (sanitation)
*Telling them about the different issues of life that may be troubling them.
*Providing moral teaching to live life with dignity.
*Dealing children concerning about their mental and psychological status.
*If willing volunteers can provide study materials if any.
*Teaching them to converse in English so they may be able to excel their study.
*Volunteers can help them in singing, dancing, drawing, painting and playing.
*Volunteers can help the children for their family as well.
*Volunteers may help the community with the help of these children to aware about health & Hygiene and environmental issues.
3: Ongoing awareness programmes:
The organisation will run awareness programmes on HIV/AIDS, Human Trafficking, Child Labour and Drug Addiction which are the present burning problems of our society. These problems are not only taking lives of both innocent and guilty people but have killed the morality and humanity of our society and culture. That is why our organisation is trying to save our integrity for the future generation of our society. Although we may not be able to eradicate these problems totally, we can minimise the dangers by raising awareness. The organisation is also helping the poor villagers by distributing of clothes and other necessary items.

Project Summary
Himalayan Media Welfare Society is just starting out just like a newly born baby we are on the crawling stage.
We are trying our best to excel the working skills in the projects, even though our local volunteers are not fully equipped.
We are in need of Global Volunteers whether they are trained, untrained, experienced, inexperienced or a simply just wanting to help, to upgrade our projects by using their ideas, thoughts and skills.
Volunteers will have to work 15 to 20 hours per week as per their capacity.
Unlike many volunteering organisations around the world WE DO NOT TAKE ANY CHARGES, FEES OR COMMISSION to be a part of our team. We believe the life experiences, education and most of all love that our volunteers bring is the most valuable asset to the children and communities of Gorubathan (Darjeeling) India. Our programs are desirable and needy and will try and accommodate our volunteers as best as possible to make your stay with us efficient and rewarding.
SHOULD YOU NEED A PLACE TO STAY: We can accommodate up to 4 - 6 people or Group at any time, although arrangement for further persons (Group Volunteers) could be arranged upon request. All our previous volunteers have opted to utilise the homestay we can offer, please contact us for your booking of accommodation and food. Using Homestays ensures you have great value for money and puts all proceeds back into the local community. If you choose to stay within a homestay you will have all local facilities and internet access also and we can also arrange local pick-up and drop-off if you let us know your arrangements. The costs are US $ 105 a week per person or just $15 per day- This money gives you two home cooked meals as well as Tea every day and accommodation.
Airport pick up and drop off is $ 100 only.
Here at HMWS we don’t require you to have any formal qualifications as we believe everybody can bring something positive to our organisation. Desirable qualities are spoken English, teaching experience, but more importantly a kind heart and the willingness to make a positive difference in our deprived area.
All Volunteer should be 16 years above.
