Project Description
The IAG is an Austrian foreign school. This organisation also runs a sea turtle hatchery. The goal is the conservation of endangered sea turtles that come to beaches on the Pacific Coast to nest. We collect and incubate as many eggs as possible.
Station sea turtles of the Austrian School is a multifaceted project has several objectives such as:
An educational project: The starting point are the lessons of ecology, but there have been many cross - classroom activities (art classes, elementary school , sports). It is the basis of the class and the tour of the Guatemalan Austrian Institute and the College of Vienna. We are always happy to work with partner schools.
A conservation project: each year are collected and sold in Guatemala all sea turtle eggs "ridley" (Lepidochelis olivacea). There is a legal Donationssystem at a rate of 20% of the collection. These eggs are incubated by registered hatcheries on the Pacific coast and hatchlings are released into the sea. The leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is valid for 2 years in the Guatemalan Pacific as extinct as no more nests activities take place.
A science project: despite incomplete or inadequate records of recent years is a new effort to collect scientific data. Statistical measures of egg and sliding and precise and uniform temperature for 2013. The renewal of the small house is to create a haven for future volunteers are planned.
A development project: in cooperation with the local population is key to the success of our project. This year we have built a food supplier to the village school it stays organized with a local guide boat trips to nearby mangroves and all the renovation work carried out by local artisans. Both our staff are also from El Garitón.
