Project Description
International Primate Rescue, founded in 1996 in South Africa, provides sanctuary care for exotic primates of any species, from anywhere in the world. Being exotic, they cannot be returned to the wild and our work is to socialize them with companions of the same species and provide them with the natural surrounding for the remainder of their lives. Many of our primates are hand reared ex-pets who arrive with behavioural problems, so this is an excellent programme for volunteers interested in behavioural issues.
The sanctuary, a registered non profit organisation currently houses over 100 primates consisting of Marmosets, Tamarins, Squirrel Monkeys, Capuchins, Barbary Macaques, Mona monkeys and Grey Mouse Lemurs.

Project Summary
The volunteer duties include feeding (by hand twice a day), cleaning, observations, hand rearing (when necessary), giving medications, enclosure repairs and building. Volunteers work for 5 hours a day and have two days off a week for sightseeing or relaxing around the sanctuary. An afternoon a week is put aside for volunteer to interact directly with the monkeys and may go into the enclosures we know are safe to play with the monkeys.
GBP 125 per volunteer per week includes accommodation only. Volunteers buy and prepare their own food, or they may order cooked food that is delivered to the sanctuary. The sanctuary is open all year round, so the volunteer may chose when to arrive and depart as well as their length of stay. The volunteering fee does not include travel or insurance.
Volunteers must be over 18 years old. No other qualifications are necessary.
