Project Description
Kanahau URCF is a newly established research facility on the north side of the island of Utila, Honduras. We are primarily biology based but welcome researchers from all study areas to join us. The facility is located about two miles outside the only town. It is surrounded by tropical broad leaf forest, just a few hundred feet from the Caribbean sea and situated at the bottom of 'Pumpkin Hill' which affords unparalleled views of this small island.
Presently, we are a small, dedicated team. We offer full board accommodation, including three meals a day, and can accommodate individuals and small groups.
We run several long term studies at the facility and host visiting research scientists with their own studies. Some of the large projects we are currently working on include: the Bats of the Bay Islands, population monitoring of the critically endangered iguana Ctenosaura bakeri (endemic to Utila), and work on the insect biodiversity of Utila, and Environmental Education for the island.

Project Summary
Kanahau is a conservation research facility that was started to promote research into the flora and fauna of Utila. In 2016, our work includes monitoring the population of the Ctenosaura bakeri (our critically endangered endemic iguana), cataloging the bat species, investigating the insect diversity of this island, and educational outreach to the community. We hope to expand our areas of research to more of the fauna and flora that the island has to offer in the very near future, but we need your help!
The fees to join our terrestrial research programs as a volunteer are calculated at $900 for the first three weeks (the minimum stay) and then a 10% discount is applied, dropping the price to $270 for each additional week. For example a six week stay would cost $1,710.
If you are joining us as an independent researcher the fees are calculated at $225 for every week you stay (three weeks minimum).
This is for full board accommodation (three meals a day). Please note when your booking with us has been accepted you will be required to pay a minimum deposit of 50% to confirm your placement.
Kanahau is open to all, not just biologists but also to geologists, archaeologists, anthropologists, teachers, film makers, engineers, in fact anyone who would like to visit and conduct their own research on Utila or help with the projects that are already running. We can assist with logistics, permits and permissions, provide local knowledge and advice, and also help you plan your study before you arrive. Min 18 years old but experience in field/lab research will be appreciated. Rabies vaccination is obligatory.
