Project Description
Kitega Community Centre is a registered Non- Governmental Organisation in Uganda that’s aims at attaining a good standard of living for the disabled children and the people in the area surrounding the project base.
We seek to empower those who have been marginalized and underserved, providing them with the knowledge, strategic information, skills, resources and capital necessary to become economically independent and self-sustaining.
Our main programs focus on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, vocational training, adult education, and micro-enterprises. Our advocacy programs focus on the special strengths as well as needs of children with disabilities, and we seek to end prejudice and discrimination against people with disabilities.

Project Summary
How volunteers can get involved:
Volunteers can get involved in a number of activities, the list below mentions some of the activities to help you decide what you can do as a volunteer. It is important to note that some projects do not run for the entire year, i.e Construction projects and alike require volunteers to raise the necessary funds to buy the equipments to make the project a reality. We also encourage volunteers to initiate projects as much as possible.
Education Initiatives:
Education is the key to success and for several years we have been empowering our community through education.
Volunteering in nearby schools:
We have partnered with rural schools in the area in order help them to provide quality education. Volunteers can work in the schools, helping to teach subjects such as English, math and science. Volunteers can also assist in our adult education programs, teaching basic reading and writing skills.
Teaching children with learning difficulties:
The community centre serves children with learning difficulties, and volunteers can help with their education and can assist the children with their arts and crafts activities.
Teaching Music and Dance:
Volunteers can also get involved by teaching the children music and dance.. At the centre we are in the process of creating a children’s choir, so this is a great opportunity for volunteers with a background in music and the performaning arts. Volunteers can also teach the children to play instruments such as piano and guitars.
Care Projects:
We believe that care is something that is not too small to give. The Care Projects involve the following activities:
Home Visits: Volunteers and staff visit families in need and get to know them better. This helps the centre to get to know the needs of the community, and it also creates a ray of hope for the families. Home visiting also involves distributing basic items to the families in need and befriending the local families.
Home-Based Care: This entails activities like cleaning the home and its surrounding and putting things in order at a particular homestead to ensure that they enjoy a good living standard. Through this activity, children with learning difficulties are monitored to assess their independence on performing certain tasks like washing, eating, etc.
Building Constructions:
Volunteers can engage in construction projects. These projects can include constructing a classroom block, houses for individuals in the community, latrines for homesteads to help improve health conditions, and a health facility.
NB: The construction projects are ideal for teams/groups and it is vital to gather the necessary donations and construction materials prior to volunteering.
Water projects
Water remains a problem in the community, and a water project is ideal for the communities we serve. Volunteers can help with the establishment of accessible and safe water for the community. In the area where we operate, the water table is not very far; in addition there are a number of water wells that need to be improved to provide safe water.
This project is also ideal for teams/groups that can help to raise the necessary donations for the project. In addition it is vital for the teams to have water engineers and others who possess the necessary technical knowledge.
HIV/AIDS Awareness
HIV/AIDS remains a problem in Uganda. The majority of individuals in the community remain ignorant about the disease. Volunteers can help lead a campaign against this deadly disease, and this can be done through community outreach and sensitization.
Environmental Project:
The children are currently involved in teaching the community about the need to protect natural resources. We believe that the children can be effective messengers and role models for the community. Furthermore, their involvement will further prove to the community that disabled and orphaned children can make many positive contributions to the community. Volunteers can assist in planting trees and in cleaning-up projects.
Farming Project:
Agriculture is the main economic activity in Uganda; however, some families lack the knowledge and resources needed to support themselves effectively. Improving their agricultural skills and knowledge will greatly reduce poverty in the community.
Volunteers with a background in agriculture and animal husbandry can initiate projects to raise animals such as chicken and pigs; they can also teach better farming practices. Volunteers can also support Project Porridge by planting crops such as maize, which is later turned into flour to provide porridge and food for the children while they are at school.
Women Project:
Women are very vital in helping to fight poverty at the grass roots level. The mothers in the village want to ensure the best for their children and household. The women in the community operate a village community bank, which provides loans for women to start income-generation enterprises. It is ideal for volunteers who are interested in women’s emancipation to get involved in this project and to empower rural women.
Medical Project:
Volunteers can also help to provide medical services to the community. This is ideal for volunteers in the health fields, such as doctors and nurses. Volunteers can help out at local clinics and hospitals. Kitega Community Centre also welcomes doctors who have mobile medical equipments and who can work in the village directly.
