Project Description
Located in Granada, Nicaragua, La Esperanza Granada is a volunteer group focusing on children’s education. ‘Born’ in 2002, we started in one small village on the outskirts of Granada, and now help more than 2,000 children in poverty-stricken areas. Our volunteers go out into the schools and assist the teachers, tutor young children, run sports programs, introduce children to computers, teach English and help stimulate an interest in learning.
We are a non-profit, non-political, non-denominational organization, funded by donations of individuals, groups, service groups, schools, etc. and believe that by providing opportunities and resources for the long term educational advancement and community development of Nicaraguan barrios we can brighten the future of the children by empowering the people of the villages to improve their current living conditions and break the cycle of poverty.

Project Summary
Many volunteer positions are available depending on need, but we are always looking for volunteers who want to work directly with the children. A strong Spanish language skill is helpful, but we have volunteer positions for all language levels.
Our volunteers assist the teachers, tutor young children, run sports programs, introduce children to computers, teach English and much more. Volunteer positions are designed for our volunteers to develop very strong and meaningful relationships with their students.
Our volunteers work between 5 and 7 hours per day, 4 to 5 days per week. We normally ask that you stay a minimum of 4 weeks, though a longer time is beneficial both for you and the children you will work with. We welcome long term volunteers and often have volunteers who stay 6 months or longer.
We believe that often, our volunteers learn more from our students than vica versa and that our ¨Ayudantes¨ leave as ambassadors for a better world. As such, we think that volunteering should be free! We only ask for a one time $20 administration fee.
Volunteers are responsable for their own food, lodging and travel expenses. La Esperanza has lodging available (Within blocks of El Parque Central) and we ask for $23 a week to cover housing expenses. We can also arrange a ride to and from the airport.
There are no requirements. A mínimum knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not necessary. We ask for a mínimum commitment of atleast 4 weeks, but encourage longer.
