Project Description
The Moroccan Center for Arabic Studies is a language school and volunteering organization. These two ideas are very compatible as the best way to learn a language is through active engagement with the target community or society of the language.
Furthermore, volunteering in a context where the volunteer has only a very limited ability to communicate with their surroundings can seriously detract from how much of an impact they are able to have through their work. However, although we always encourage both for these reasons, they are not dependent on each other, that is why we are perfectly able and happy to establish volunteering positions to those who only want to volunteer just as we can teach language without putting our students to work.
As a ‘volunteering agency’ what we are able to do through our location and connections is access many different international NGOs and local social work placements for those who express a desire to get involved in the local community. The aims of volunteering are simply to assist these on going projects.
Through our network of connections, we are able to place our volunteers in projects where they might have experience or an interest in gaining experience through working in a certain setting such as education, childcare, healthcare, assisting the disabled or elderly and women’s empowerment to name some possible placements.

Project Summary
Volunteering possibilities are many and dependent on the schedule of the volunteer as based on their work placement(s) and other factors such as whether they are taking language classes or not.
The volunteering, on its own would consist of working 4 - 5 days of the week and anywhere from 3 - 6 hours per day.
These details are decided based on the information provided by the applicant on what are their goals from the trip and the work. For example, do they express an interest in volunteer / tourism or are they more interested in dedicated work in the community.
We offer our volunteers different options for accommodation based on their desires and budget. Housing options and costs are done in local currency so rough estimates in dollars are the following: $20 / day for homestay option which includes 3 meals, private room, laundry, internet etc.A single occupancy residence with basic amenities: $13 / day, and double occupancy: $10 / day. There is a small administrative fee attached to setting up the volunteer work which is $130 / month.
Some of our placements require certain skills. For example, if the volunteer expresses a desire to work in education, they would have to be a native speaker of English. Some placements such as working in a women’s rights organization or NGO may require a proficiency in either Arabic or French and we will need a copy of CV or resume for more established roles. If the volunteer has no knowledge of either, they would have to enrol in a language class in order to make the volunteering possible. However most of our placements have no specific skill requirements attached and volunteers must be over the age of 17 years.
