Project Description

Merazonia is a dynamic Rescue and Rehabillitation Centre for trafficked and abused Amazonian animals, located on 250 acres of rainforest, in Mera, Ecuador. Animals confiscated by the Ministry of Environment and the police, are brought to us where our resident veterinarian gives them their first check-up in our clinic. We are caring for monkeys, kinkajous, felines, other mammals and parrots.

We work on both rehabilitating and providing release programs for the animals, though these are often complicated and time consuming projects.

Animals that are too injured or imprinted for this, are given the most natural and comfortable life possible at the centre.

Volunteers help us care for the animals (feeding them and cleaning their cages, life enrichment), as well as continue to construct enclosures and trails to improve the centre.

A typical day starts with feeding the animals and cleaning their cages at 7.30 a.m. After breakfast we work on maintaining and keeping the park clean, or building new trails and enclosures. We have a one hour lunch break. The animals get fed again at 3 p.m.

$120 per week for first 2 weeks, $100 per week for week 3 -6, $80 per week after that. This means all the basic living costs are covered such as clean sheets, gum boots, gas for kitchen and shower, all food - accept for things like alcohol, cola and snacks.

All the remaining money goes directly towards the animal care such as their food, medication and medical attention. If there is money left, it is spend on materials to build new enclosures or possible release programs. Though in general, we now rely on external donations in order to cover these costs.

The minimum age requirement is 18 years and the minimum time for volunteering is 2 or 4 weeks, depending of the time of year. You will need to have a basic level of fitness, as most work is physical and walking up and down the jungle surroundings. Knowledge of English and/or Spanish is required. There are no requirements as to education and such, though we will try to take into account special interests and professional skills.
