The Mission of the Miguel Asturias Academy is to improve living standards in Guatemala by creating informed, critically thinking, socially conscious, citizens, empowered to live lives of their own choosing and be engaged as leaders in their communities.
It is the vision of the Asturias Academy to be a model and a vehicle through which Guatemala’s education system is transformed so that all children:
Have access to quality, culturally relevant education

Project Summary
We are looking for volunteers to teach English, volunteer in our library, assist the teachers in the computer lab and carpentry workshop, and help with development and fundraising. Your role will be helping expose the kids to speaking English, and assist the teachers in the day-to-day activities in their classrooms. The role of volunteers is largely dependent on what work they are interested in and in what capacity they want to get involved.
The cost per month is $175 and that covers housing and 2 meals a day with a host family. Spanish classes are available as well if the volunteer is interested. Typical commitments are at least 3 days a week for a minimum of 3 months.
An Intermediate level of Spanish is required, as you will need to communicate with the teachers, the director and the children to some extent.
