Project Description

Monkeyland is the world’s first free-roaming, multi-species primate sanctuary. Its aims are to provide ex-captive primates with a healthier, more natural life and to raise public awareness about primates.

Our mission is that guests leave our sanctuaries Monkeyland and Birds of Eden with a greater understanding of the primates of the world and the threats they are facing. One of our main goals is to educate the public about the adverse effects of keeping primates and birds as pets, in terms of both physical and psychological health.

Volunteers will be considered if they are hard-working, fast-learning, enthusiastic and prepared to cheerfully fulfill tasks such as walking tourists from our entrance gate to the reception to explain the basic rules on the way, working in our curio stores, helping out at reception or assisting with the birds and primate care.

However, we are particularly keen to fill the following positions:

Multilingual rangers/guides and Students with photography/filming skills for documenting primates.

Working hours are from 8:00 to 17:00 and a five day week, may include weekends.

Volunteers can be provided with free accommodation in our 2 volunteer houses. There are singles, doubles and dormitories, and allocation depends on availability of space and length of stay.

Meals cannot be provided, but the accommodation includes a fully equipped kitchen, and around R400 (about 50 dollars) per week will be more than enough for food and essentials if you stick to the local farms and supermarkets as opposed to the restaurants and deli stores in town.

Genuine interest in primates and/or birds and fluent English are vital for each Monkeyland or Birds of Eden volunteer.
