Project Description

The Nkombi Volunteer project was started 8 years ago to give students the opportunity to gain hands on experience on a working reserve. The volunteers assist the Mankwe management team in all aspects of Wildlife Management, anti poaching patrols, large mammal transects, nocturnal surveys and reserve management.

They gain experience in different research methods while they assist management and visiting scientists with long term research projects carried out on the reserve. Students are also able to gather data towards dissertations and thesis’s. The volunteers are accommodated in the rustic but comfortable Nkombi Camp in the heart of the reserve. They will have the opportunity to work with like minded people whilst gathering valuable work experience.  On completion the volunteers are issued with certificates.

Our aim is to enthuse students, guests and researchers to be passionate and responsible about conservation by showing them the beauty of the wildlife at Mankwe Wildlife Reserve, in the hope that they will leave with a deeper understanding of how all species, no matter how big or small, are essential to sustaining a healthy ecosystem. We strive to manage a healthy ecosystem where all species of fauna and flora are studied, researched and protected. Future generations will have the task of managing and repairing the damage done to the environment by previous generations and this can only be accomplished through education and awareness.
