Project Description

Pilpintuwasi is an animal rescue center and custody center located in Padre Cocha, a small town outside of Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon. We take in wildlife confiscated by the ecological police from markets, homes, and airports around the city- victims of poaching and the animal trafficking industry.

We care for a variety of species, some endangered, from various monkeys and birds to a jaguar. After rehabilitation, many are able to live in semi-captive conditions.

We also run a butterfly breeding project where we reproduce about 25 species of Amazon butterflies. We work to educate the public about the butterfly life cycle and the plight of animals in our region.

  • Project Summary

Volunteers help us with a variety of tasks. It is important that they be willing to work in many areas of the centers activities- not only in direct contact with the animals, and be up for getting wet and dirty.

Volunteers are responsible for animal enrichment projects such as making monkey toys and walking the ocelot and coatis. They also feed the monkeys every morning, take visitors on guided tours of the facility, and collect butterfly eggs.

Volunteers normally work 6 days a week at the facility, with a free day to explore around Iquitos. They start work at 8:30am and stay until 4:00pm. We have a minimum commitment of 3 weeks.

We do not charge volunteer fees, apart from a refundable deposit of US$100 which is returned to the volunteer after completion of their 3 week commitment.

Volunteers are responsible for paying their own food, travel, and accommodation costs in Padre Cocha. We do not offer housing on site, volunteers stay in the village.

There are low cost hostel or homestay options which range in price from US$7- US$15 daily including food.

Any animal or volunteer experience, travel experience, construction skills, or Spanish language ability would be especially helpful. Volunteers should be at least 18 years old, and feel comfortable living on their own in rustic conditions.
