Project Description

Project Why is a New Delhi (India) based non-profit organisation engaged in education support and life skill enhancement of slum children and their families.

Project Why provides after school support to over 800 under privileged children this is essential as teaching in state run schools is poorly run and does not provide proper education. In some cases more than 160 children are crammed into classes meant for 50 children.

We run such support from class 1 to class 12, we also have an early education programme for pre scholars and a day care for children and young adults with disabilities. We are located in Delhi in 3 different locations.

Our aim is to ensure that children do not drop out of school (dropout rates in Delhi are over 60%) and accede to a better future.

Over the past 12 years no Project Why child has dropped out and many of our alumni have gone on to higher studies and/or are gainfully employed.

Our staffs is all issued from the community in which we work and thus we have created over 50 jobs.

  • Project Summary

Volunteers play a very important role in project why. As all our staff are from the community they often have poor English speaking skills and a limited vision of the world. It is the volunteers that open new windows for our children.

We work in to shifts as boys and girls in delhi do not go to school that the same time. In the morning we have boys and girls in the afternoon. Working hours are 8.30 to 11.45 and 1.45 to 4. 00.

Volunteers help children with their English and other subjects and are always supported by one of our staff members

We do not charge any volunteer fee or seek any donation. We do not pay for travel to and from South Delhi.
As it is difficult to find cheap accommodation in South Delhi where we are located, we have a flat share that can accommodate 6 volunteers. The charges are 750 Rs (approximately $15/day) although this may soon rise to $20/day due to increased costs in South Delhi. The flat share is located close to are main centre, we provide breakfast and dinner (lunch being at the project) internet connection, laundry, TV etc.
Transport to and from the place of work is also provided.

We do not require any specific skill and normally do not accept volunteers under 18. But we have had volunteers as young as 16 who have done very well.

We look for compassion, respect for the culture and tradition of the country and a desire to work with children.
