Project Description

Quetzaltrekkers is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization based in León, Nicaragua. The idea of Quetzaltrekkers is simple: hike volcanoes, help kids. QT offers adventure hikes and volcano tours, and then donates 100% of the profits to five social projects that work with street kids and other at-risk youth in León.

We are almost always looking for people to come and support our trekking team! As a volunteer trekking guide, you will be leading all of the different hikes we offer. The hikes last from one to three days, and their proceeds are the main source of funding for the five programs we support.

  • Project Summary

You get to hike!  You take tourists to awesome volcanoes. It is your job to ensure an enjoyable, safe, and exciting trip. You also handle all trip preparations, clean-up, and expense reports.  Depending on the time of year and number of volunteers you can expect to hike three to four days per week.  All overnight hikes have a minimum of two guides to share the responsibility.

Guides also participate in two office shifts (explaining hikes and signing up clients), special events (Trivia and Raffle nights), a manager role (specific areas of the organizations operations that need your enthusiasm and dedication), and hanging out with the kids that our money supports.

As a guide you receive all expenses and food on the hikes, experience in guiding, experience in cooperatively running a volunteer organization, and most importantly, the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children here in León and the surrounding area.

Guides can expect to pay about 300$ a month for food, accommodation, social activities, etc. Rooms in the guide house are available to rent for 80$ a month or we can assist you in finding outside housing options in León.
