Project Description

Teach for Myanmar (TFM) is a non-profit organization that matches volunteer teachers with community based organizations in Myanmar. We provide a unique volunteer opportunity to support the social and educational development of Myanmar.

Our team has been based in Myanmar since 2009. We are educators and volunteer managers working together to ensure a high quality volunteer experience that provides sustainable education to the people that need it most in Myanmar.

Our volunteers teach English and academic skills to young adults. All our work is apolitical, focused on making sustainable education more accessible despite social, geographic and financial challenges. Our volunteer teachers fill the vital role of sharing knowledge and skills to help young adult students reach their goals in community development.

  • Project Summary

TFM works with community based organizations to create teaching placements that match the needs of the students and our teachers’ strengths. Most of our volunteers teach English, social sciences, and/or academic skills to young adults ages 17-30.

Class sizes range from 5-30 students, with an average class size of 10 students. Our teachers spend 3 hours a day up to 20 hours per week in the classrooms, leaving ample time to prepare lessons. Our students represent many ethnic groups and geographic locations around Myanmar. Our students share one commonality: They are committed to improving their communities.

Volunteers are placed in small to large cities, primarily in Yangon in Mandalay. We try to accommodate volunteers’ preferences of location and organization type as much as possible; however, volunteers are placed with our most urgent need.

Before arriving, volunteers know which city they will volunteer in, and detailed placement information is explained during orientation.

There are no fees to volunteer with TFM, but our volunteers support themselves by paying for all their costs including accommodation, food, and transportation. We are able to provide some financial support at the end of the placement if requested.

Our volunteers typically spend $150 USD per week during their stay in Myanmar, including travel and visa costs, although this varies considerably depending on lifestyle (fan vs. AC, street food vs. western, bus vs. taxis) and where are you travelling from.

Volunteers must make a minimum 10 week commitment, and have the option to stay as long as a year. Ideal candidates speak English with fluency and have teaching experience or strong academic backgrounds. We seek candidates who are hard working, flexible, and able to live in a developing country.
