Project Description
The Irish Seal Sanctuary is Ireland’s only full-time, 24 hour, and wildlife rescue - rehabilitation facility. It provides a service for the entire country and is sustained entirely by voluntary effort and in field conditions. The Sanctuary currently deals with more than 1,000 telephone calls per year reporting injured or distressed seals.
The Irish Seal Sanctuary is Ireland's only full-time, wildlife rescue / rehabilitation facility. We deal with sick or injured seals and marine wildlife, and also have active programmes in research and education. The Irish Seal Sanctuary is a professionally run Wildlife Hospital, Rescue and Rehabilitation Facility. We are a registered charity and to date have received no State or Government grant or funding. It is sustained entirely by voluntary effort and financed by donations from the public and grant bodies.
Ireland has 6,000 km of coastline excluding islands and has jurisdiction over 18% of European waters. At the ISS we provide a rescue and rehabilitation service for the entire country. Over the past 16 years we have seen a dramatic increase in the demand on our services. We currently deal with in excess of 1,000 telephone calls per annum reporting injured or distressed seals, or marine related incidents.
The Irish Seal Sanctuary deals mainly with seals, (Grey seal and Harbour Seals) but has also rescued dolphins, porpoises, otters, deer, numerous birds in distress and even a Siberian tiger.
