Project Description
VolNepal has experience in placing interns from various medical backgrounds ranging from premedical undergraduate students to professionally trained individuals. Although VolNepal will place you in a situation which caters to your experience, it is important to keep in mind that your motivation and willingness to learn will translate to a more fruitful experience. Maintaining a flexible attitude will provide you with learning opportunities that reach beyond the basic diagnosis and care of patients.
You will see firsthand how a developing hospital runs with a lower technology standard than the western world, how the doctors and medical assistants interact to complete tasks, and the cost of healthcare in a private versus government run hospitals in Nepal. If your interest is there, this placement provides you with the opportunity to learn about Nepali heath care from the ground up.
If you are entering this program with some medical training, there will be more opportunity to participate and contribute in providing healthcare to incoming patients. After getting to know the doctors and they have some knowledge of your skill set, they will help you to find opportunities the practice what you know and teach you about diseases that can only be found in tropical developing countries. Whether you are a first year medical student or trained professional, many doctors here are willing to let you work with patients if you express your interest in doing so.
