Project Description
Volunteer Maldives has been in operation for over three years and in that time has welcomed nearly 200 volunteers to the Maldives.
Offering a variety of programs to benefit both the island communities and the volunteers, Volunteer Maldives work very closely with local island councils, school principles and NGO's to ensure the programs set up are what is really required in these small communities.
The programs offered are as Qualified Teachers - mainly of the English Language, but other subjects are welcomed! Teaching assistants to help in the classrooms with qualified teachers, Pre-school Assistants, Sports and Football coaches, Medical Internships, and will also look at any individual skill that may be required at any given time.
The Maldives teaching medium is English, but many of the teachers are Expats from Sri Lanka and India, whose language is very similar to Dhivehi - the Maldivian language. Its easy, therefore, for these teachers to learn the local language, and thus easier to teach - consequently, many of the children don't have the exposure to the English Language they should have. What is also evident, the kids understand the spoken English much of the time, but have very little oral practice and are therefore shy to speak in case its not perfect.
Already within the last two years, the island schools where we place regular volunteers say there is a definite improvement in the students with their spoken English and they have developed much more confidence - this is fabulous news - and one of Volunteer Maldives aims to hear of such improvements.
Pre-school placements are excellent for non-qualified individuals, with a keen sense of fun who can deliver inspirational and educational games to give the younger kids a good foundation.
With the sports and football coaching placements, encouraging the Maldivians to participate in physical activities not only brings communities together but encourages them to look after their health, and achieve aims and goals they may never have a chance to work towards without this form of inspiration and encouragement.

Project Summary
Typically, a volunteer teaching in a school will work in the classes from around 7am to 2 pm - dependant on the size of the school and number of students, and whether there is one session a day. The same goes for any teaching placement in the schools - whether as a qualified teacher, an assistant, a pre-school worker or a sports coach. For special football coaches - the volunteers work will most likely take place outside of school hours, and probably in the cooler evenings when the youth like to get out and about and relax!
The working week in Islamic Maldives is Sunday to Thursday, with Friday's and Saturdays being weekends. During these two days, volunteers typically get taken out for swimming and snorkelling, visits to uninhabited islands for picnics, night fishing and barbecues under the stars with their new found island friends!
It’s a fabulous experience and a wonderful balance of work and play whilst experiencing a unique culture.
Monthly program fees start from $1400; minimum placements need to be for 1 month, reduced prices are available for advanced bookings and longer stays.
Included in this cost is all Accommodation and Meals, transportation by boat to the host island with the opportunity to pay a supplement for a thrilling seaplane transfer if applicable.
All Volunteers are me at the airport by a Volunteer Maldives Representative, are given a local sim card with some credit, 24 hour in-country phone support from the Volunteer Maldives team who are always contact able by phone, or email and will always assist.
A very wearable Volunteer Maldives t-shirt is also given, a 'VM' bag, and on departure a certificate of participation will be presented.
Volunteers need to be over 18 years old, have an excellent command of the English language. Documentation will need to be completed, including giving access to referees/teachers - if students, and a police report for those not students. Signed terms and conditions need to be signed before being accepted on a placement to ensure all volunteers are aware of the rules of the country, do's and don'ts and are aware of the culture differences in order to maintain respect towards the people and local customs.
